Week 185

Sept 12-18

This was a big week of birthdays for our family.  Ed turned 33 on September 12 and Abel turned 1 on September 14.  Last week Jack started his first year of preschool, so naturally what came around this week?  Yep, you guessed it...sickness.  We all got sick.  Jack made it to school on a Wednesday and a Friday (he only goes M,W,F) and by Friday night he was running fevers.  By Saturday evening/Sunday morning Abel was also running fevers.  Ick!!!  At some point I also had some kind of cold/flu thing going on and Ed stayed the healthiest of us all.  I felt really bad because I had managed to take off 8 days in a row for Ed and Abel's birthdays, but spent the majority of it being sick, or taking care of sick people at home.  We managed to do some present opening, birthday singing, and cake eating on Ed's special day.  Unfortunately, we did not get any pictures so I have nothing to show you.  He requested an ice cream cake so we had one from Baskin Robins with his favorite ice cream, mint chocolate chip.  He got some pretty neat gifts.  USC tickets from his mom and Harvin along with a new watch.  I got him a Steelers Jersey that he's wanted for a long time as well as a night out away from the kids.  I will take pictures of that adventure when we do it.

So as you all know I have been planning Abel's Happy 1st Birthday Circus Party for months and months.  Through all the sickness and commotion we managed to pull it off!!!  I just want to take this time to thank everyone who helped me get everything together.  I had lots and lots of help from both sides of the family and some amazing friends as well.  I think the party was a super success and everyone seemed to have a good time!  We had a very nice turnout and Abel got some amazing presents!

I LOVE the circus theme!!!  I think the colors and animals are perfect for a 1 year old's party.  As you all know, my sister Caroline and I love to bake and decorate cookies.  We planned out exactly which cookie cutters we were going to use months in advance.  Here are some of them.  We had help from Ed and his mom too.  They are great decorators!  :)

For Abel's smash cake I made a circus tent out of a Big Top Cupcake mold that I borrowed from my neighbor Karin.  I had made a similar cake for Jack's 1st birthday.  They are the perfect size for a smash cake!  I just adjusted the shape slightly by not filling the top mold all the way.  I frosted it white and then piped the stripes with red frosting.  I happened to have some leftover blue from the cupcakes so I fashioned a "banner" around the tent.  To top it off I used a toothpick and scrap yellow card stock to make a flag.  For fun I added an elephant cookie from our stash.  I think it turned out nicely if I do say so myself!

The Damage.

This kid loves cake!!!!

Cheese face!

The grand finale of the party was the "photo booth."  Really it was more of a staged photo area outside.  We had every guest take a picture using props.  My friend Rachel was supposed to be a guest at my party, but she graciously offered to take the pictures and I just couldn't resist.  She is AMAZING.  If you need a photographer, please look her up.  She specializes in newborns, but she can do just about anything!  Here is a link to her website: http://www.willaevephotography.com/  I tagged all of her pictures...you can definitely see how amazing they are.  :)  The difference between a real photographer and a "momtographer" as I call myself is quite obvious.  Maybe one day I will learn.  Thank you to everyone who came to the party.  Thank you to everyone who helped out with the party!  It was sad to see my baby growing up, but exciting at the same time!!!
