Week 24

Aug 19-25
This week Daddy is still on TDY. We are kind of getting into a routine, but it is still very difficult and I think that Jack definitely misses his Daddy.
We were very sad that this past weekend was Devin's last time to baby-sit Jack. She has been awesome and was his first true babysitter when Mommy went back to work. She goes to school in PA, so she had to go back up to start classes. We will miss you Devin!! I am so sad I didn't get a picture of you with Jack before you left. Here is the only picture I could find of Jack with Devin that I stole off her facebook album. Look how happy he is!!!
Jack is now 5 1/2 months old and he is doing so many new things. He is so fun and playful, always smiling and laughing. He is still very easygoing (yay!) and very rarely gets fussy. He still loves his bathtime. He gets a bath every other day in his little tub. After his baths we give him a massage and lotion him up...I think that is his favorite part. Here are some pictures right after bathtime of him in his towel. :)
Another thing he loves is being NAKED! He thinks it is soooo funny. I thought it would be cute to let him be naked for awhile and get some pictures of his little chubby butt. I put him on the couch and he was having a great time...then he decided to pee on the couch. Don't worry, I cleaned it all up, but he thought it was pretty hilarious!!He now sits up all by himself and rarely takes a spill backwards. He's getting pretty good at balancing and is still able to grab his toys and play with them. We do a lot of sitting and playing as well as tummy time still. He can roll over from his tummy to his back, but not vice versa. He sleeps on his tummy so when he does roll over he wakes up and we have to go in and flip him over. He kind of reminds me of a turtle...getting stuck on his back. He sleeps through the night now. Last night he went to bed at 8:00 and slept straight through the night until about 5:30 this morning. I don't mind getting up early, especially when I can get a full nights rest!! Finally!! :)

He's really starting to become social and loves to see new people and play with other kids. His little BFF is Riley. He lives down the street and he is 8 months old. Riley's Daddy works with Ed so we have become very close to his family. Since the dads are gone we decided to take one night a week cooking for the others. Each night we gather at one another's house for dinner, very nice to have free dinners a few nights a week! Here is Jack playing with Riley last night when they came over to our house. They kind of matched with their outfits.

And finally here are some pictures from today of Jack in the cute little whale outfit that his Uncle Ryan and Aunt Amanda sent him when they went on their Alaskan cruise. The back says "Alaska" with a picture of the whale and on the butt it says "Blow Out". Very cute! Thank you for such an adorable gift!!

Week 23

Aug 12-19
This week Daddy left to go TDY (temporary duty) for awhile. It is the first time he has left Jack for more than a few hours and it has been very difficult for him and for us. Unfortunately since he is gone that means I am holding things down at home including everything for Jack, Hope, the house, and still working full-time. I feel like I'm getting less sleep now than when he was first born. We are making it though. Before Daddy left we finally got Jack's Steeler's jersey in the mail that Ed had ordered for this football season. I told him to get at least 12 months so it would last through the season. We were thinking it would be a little big but he would grow into it. We were wrong. It just now fits, and I don't think it will last all the way until the Superbowl next year. It is super-cute though! We took some family pictures of everyone in their jerseys. I wish we would have put Hope in hers too, but I didn't even think of it at the time.

Week 22

Aug 5-11

This week Jack FINALLY rolled over and we got it on tape! Well I can't take full credit for it b/c Ed got it on tape while I was at work. Jack has rolled over a couple of other times, but we could never get it recorded. He sleeps on his stomach and there were a few times I would go in to get him when he woke up and I noticed he would be on his back. It's pretty funny that he is just now rolling over b/c he already sits up pretty well. Normally babies roll over before sitting up, I guess he just skipped that step.

I really like this video b/c Jack didn't realize Ed was standing behind him and you can just how hard he is focusing. He tries a few times before he actually rolls over and it is so neat to see him figure out how to get his body just right. I especially love the look on his face when he gets it right, he just looks so accomplished and proud of himself. PS-the shadow you see in the background at one point is Hope walking by, the noise you hear right after that is Hope sitting on the overstuffed chair in Jack's room. She is always in Jack's room when he is in his crib...so cute! Watch at the very end when Ed tells Jack to say bye, it almost looks like he is waving to the camera.

He is doing so many new things and I am so proud of him. Before we know it he will be mobile, crawling around and getting into everything. I'm already preparing for that day. Enjoy the video! :)

Week 21

July 29-Aug 4

This week we hit a bunch of milestones. On Friday we left Jack for the first time overnight since he was born. Well, technically. Maybe I should backtrack and explain. We have a wonderful babysitter Devin who has been working with us since I went back to work after Jack was born. She is amazing and absolutely loves him, but we are sad because she has to go back to PA for school in a few weeks. She offered to watch Jack while we went out on a much needed date so we took her up on it. We were going to go away for a night, but at the last minute realized we really just wanted the chance to go out and experience some of the night life fun that we have heard about since we moved here. We decided to explore Historic Downtown Melbourne. It's basically a cute little street with restaurants, bars, shoppes, etc. We had a nice dinner and walked around for awhile, went to a few bars and had drinks, then met up with friends around 9:30 and drank some more. It was a lot of fun to just let loose and not worry about getting up all night to feed a baby. We had dinner at a place called the Casbah. The food was decent, but the best part was the dessert. Here is a picture of it in all of its delicious glory...

Here we are at one of the bars. Apparently this used to be a wine bar and it had a very mellow atmosphere. It had couches and little tables with candles all around and one side was completely open to the outside and there was kind of a garden-like zen atmosphere out there. Very fun. We had a lot of fun. After all of our drinking we walked over to Bizarro's for some pizza to go and we called our cab home. Devin was gracious enough to offer to stay until 10:00 am so we could sleep in, but I was up at like 7:00 b/c I missed Jack and wanted to play with him. Thank you Devin for our night out!!
The next day (Saturday) we decided to have a family day and went to the zoo. We've been wanting to get an annual zoo pass for awhile now, but we were kind of waiting for Jack to get old enough to appreciate it a little bit. I really didn't think he would even notice the animals, but when we got there he was looking around everywhere. He is so much more aware of his surroundings now. I am really glad we got the zoo pass. It pretty much pays for itself in 3 trips and there are so many nice perks that come with it.
First of all, you get free admission to pretty much any zoo in the U.S. so we can go when we visit Columbia or Pittsburgh. We get in 30 minutes before the zoo opens to the public so we can go early in the morning before it gets too hot and too crowded. Also, since we have a pass we don't have the pressure of staying all day to get our money's worth...we can just go for an hour if we want. I'm very excited about the zoo pass. Ed can't wait to start taking Jack on the weekends when I'm working so they have something to do. The Brevard Zoo isn't the most fantastic zoo ever, but it is mostly shaded and it has a train! :)
The day we went to the zoo it ended up being packed b/c it was "free school supply" day or something so we kind of just breezed through a part of it and decided we would come back later. Since we still had the whole day to ourselves, we decided to take a trip to Toys R Us. It was Jack's first time going and we thought it should be celebrated. As you know Jack loves his jumperoo, but Ed decided he had mastered all of the activities on it. He can spin all the spinning things, turn the toys, grab the birds, you get the idea. Ed was concerned that Jack needed a new challenge so we went looking for something fun and new.
Jack loved going to the toy store. Of course there were bright lights and colors everywhere. We let him play with the different toys. His favorite are ones that have neat sounds.
We picked him out an "exersaucer" activity thing. It's kind of like the jumperoo, but it doesn't really jump it kind of bounces and it has a million things to play with. By the time we got home from our long day it was time to feed Jack and put him down for the night. After he was asleep Ed and I went to tackle putting this thing together. I think it probably took us around an hour, but it was kind of fun to work as a team and it did look neat. We couldn't wait until the next day when Jack woke up so we could put him in it.
He loves it, there are so many things to look at and so many things to do. :) This week another milestone we hit was starting baby foods!!! We first tried peas for 3 days, then carrots for 3 days, and now he's up to sweet potatoes. Here is one of his funny faces...
Last but not least, we went to Jack's 4 month check-up, which was late b/c we had to reschedule it when we went to the beach. Jack now weighs 17 lbs 5 oz and he is 26 in. He has more than doubled his birthweight (which he is supposed to do at 6 months) already. He is sooo big and so much fun! He can now tripod sit by himself for a few minutes at a time without falling over (a 6 month old task). Tripod sitting is when babies grab their feet and sit up. If he loses hold of his feet he will tip over. The pediatrician said he is very healthy and accomplishing all of the things he should be.

Week 20

July 22-28

Jack has mastered rice cereal! :) He is eating it twice a day now and absolutely loves it. Next week we will move onto baby foods! Not looking forward to those diapers. We had the opportunity to go to Myrtle Beach, SC to meet up with Ed's family on their vacation. They go down every summer and somehow for the past 6 years the Navy has prevented Ed from going. We didn't think we were going to be able to go this summer, but some stuff changed at Ed's work and the timing worked out perfectly. Since we didn't think we would be going, no one was expecting us. We got to surprise Ed's mom! Grandpa Harvin helped us out with getting a place to stay and making sure Grandma didn't find out. She was so surprised she started crying! I wish I had a picture.

Our first morning at the beach we got up at Jack's usual 5:30-6:00am wake up and decided we should go take a walk on the beach to watch the sunrise. It was so peaceful early in the morning. Ed said it is his favorite memory of the beach because it was just the three of us and Jack could see the ocean without the sun blazing down on his little head. We took a nice long walk and got some pictures. Afterwards we went out to breakfast and then shopping for some tacky souvenir shirts.
We had a great time at the beach. Jack went swimming for the first time in a big pool. I wasn't sure how he would react to it since the water is much colder than the bathtub. He LOVED it!! He was kicking his legs and splashing around. I don't think we will have any problems teaching him to swim.

We took Jack down to the beach for a little while during the day. He really couldn't be out on the beach too much during the peak hours b/c even with sunscreen, a hat, a shirt, and his baby cabana it was just too hot for him. He made an appearance though.

One of the days we were in SC Mimi, Uncle Andy, and Aunt Caroline came to visit Jack for a few hours since they hadn't seen him in awhile. They wanted to see his swimming skills so we took him down to the pool. Here he is with Andy and Caroline.

Jack was obsessed with Uncle Andy. I think it's because he has so many interesting things to look at with the tattoos, piercings, facial hair, etc.

After long days in the sun it is always fun to go out to dinner with family and friends. We went to some great places for dinner with Grandma and Grandpa Harvin. Of coures Grandma couldn't get enough of Jack and was gracious to hold him at dinner so Ed and I could eat. He loved every minute of it. He was very well behaved at the restaurants.

Jack with Grandma at dinner. He fell asleep in her arms! Sooo cute!

Jack with Grandma again. He looks so snuggly and happy in this shot.

Well that was our beach adventure! Sorry it took so long to post this, there were so many pictures to go through.
