Week 67

June 16-22

As many of you know from facebook Ed and I have started the "Insanity" workout. It is a 60 day intense workout coupled with a detailed nutrition plan. We have been following it carefully and as of today we are on Day 16. After the first 2 weeks I have lost 7 pounds and Ed has lost 11. We both lost many inches in our waist as well.
I just want to say that this is all an attempt to get HEALTHY. We wanted a challenge and it is kind of fun to go through it together. We also started off overweight and desperately needed to get a jump start on a better life. I don't know if I will ever be brave enough to show my results (mostly for fear of people seeing my before pictures), but I will consider it as we complete this journey.
On another note, Jack has a new little friend named Kaitlyn. She is 3 months old and she just moved in next door to us. He is in love with her! When she came over for a play date last week he wouldn't leave her side. He insisted on lying next to her. So cute! Now anytime we ask him where the "baby" is he knows what we are talking about.

The most important part of the week was...FATHER'S DAY!!!!
Saturday I discharged all the kids from the floor and closed it up. I was secretly hoping it would stay closed so we could spend the day with Ed. We knew it wasn't going to be too extravagant because we were still trying to stay within the limits of our diet.
**Sidenote-Ed and I agreed a long time ago that Father's Day and Mother's Day are to be cherished by spending time with each other and doing nice things for the person...not buying extravagant presents. I know some people expect gifts on these days, but we think it takes away from the point. Besides, a monetary gift doesn't show how much you care about someone the same way spending time with them and doing something nice for them does.
We used to take the day and eat great food. Did you guys see the great pancakes Ed made me for Mother's Day?? Yum! :) Now that we are trying to be more healthy we decided we could splurge for just one meal.
I let Ed sleep in and when he woke up we got on our bathing suits and rode the bikes over to this little cafe we love to have breakfast at. We both got the "Christmas" omelette (egg whites, spinach, feta, and tomatoes) with a side of fresh fruit and our usual morning black coffee. Jack had the fluffiest buttermilk pancake you've ever seen. :) He ended up eating a good portion of our fruit as well. Surprisingly....he is actually liking this diet. The kid will put away some fresh fruits and veggies!!! We are delighted.
After breakfast we rode bikes to the beach and took a little stroll. Jack found some seashells and we all swam in the ocean...then we rode the bikes home and decided it would be fun to go for a swim in the backyard pool. We didn't want to go inside. Around here once you go inside it's usually for the day because once you get your shower you don't want to get all hot and sweaty again.
After all the morning activity we fed Jack lunch and a bottle and put him down for his nap. That's when I got called back in to work. Oh well, at least we got to enjoy half of Father's Day together. :)

Hey Elizabeth - I like the swanky background. Happy Independence Day to the Storch family!

In a nutshell, what is the Insanity diet? Does it rely heavily on shakes and such? I'm already doing a lower carbohydrate diet - just ditching the overtly starchy carbs and processed food "products" that sometimes dominate our diet - and it's worked for me in the past. We've been going to the gym every day, but I worry the elliptical will get old - every day, thirty minutes.

I guess I'm looking for the low-down on it - are you sticking to the diet plan "religiously," doing their workout dvd's?

:)

Hey Jen! Thank you! I finally got a picture up there to match the background! :) Insanity is a 60 day program that consists of a workout DVD and a nutrition plan. The workouts for the first month are around 40 minutes and although challenging, they are very do-able for any level of fitness. The nutrition plan consists of 5 small meals a day (eat every 3 hours) and the meals are low carb, high protein, healthy food. It's not a bunch of crazy shakes. There are some recipes for shakes. One is a Berry protein shake with fresh berries, 1/2 banana, 1 scoop of protein powder, 1 cup of skim milk, 1 tsp vanilla. That's an example of a shake. The other meals are fruits/veggies, grilled chicken, grilled fish, etc. It's all normal food that you can get at a grocery store. The hard part is getting used to what a portion is. It kind of opens your eyes as to what you are doing wrong with eating. We have been following it together and that has really helped. Jack likes the food too (thank goodness he likes fruits/veggies!). :) Hope this helps a little!!

Thanks Elizabeth - I appreciate the breakdown! :) Gerard looked into the P90X a while back - Brian Lewis used it when he was getting ready for his chief pinning - but I balked at the cost. You have to buy a chin-up bar, free weights, an exercise mat... etc.

I will end up getting *something,* just not sure what.

I LOVE the family picture at the top of the blog, by the way! Very festive!
